The I-Cubs game was postponed because of wet grounds. A makeup date has not been scheduled yet.
For those of you wondering what was up with first baseman Alfonso Rivas, he was activated off the injured list today and assigned to Iowa. He obviously did not get a chance to play.
The Tennessee Smokies shut out the Mississippi Braves, 2-0.
Five Smokies pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout. Starter Luis Lugo got the win with five innings of work, allowing just two hits. He walked three and struck out two.
Four relievers each threw a scoreless inning: Juan Gámez, Dakota Chalmers, Wyatt Short and Manuel Rodriguez with a perfect inning the save. He struck out one. Chalmers was making his Cubs organization debut. He allowed one hit and struck out two.
Right fielder Christopher Morel doubled in the top of the first inning and went to third on an error on the play. He then scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch. Morel was 1 for 4.
DH Nelson Maldonado hit an RBI double in the fourth inning, scoring Tyler Payne. Maldonado was 2 for 4 with two doubles.
South Bend Cubs
The South Bend Cubs blew a 6-0 lead and lost to the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 7-6.
Matteo Bocchi turned in a strong four-inning start. He allowed no runs and just one hit. Bocchi struck out eight and walked two.
Tyler Sullentrop was promoted from Myrtle Beach and made his High-A debut tonight. It did not go well. Sullentrop walked five batters, leading to five runs, in the fifth inning. He struck out one and gave up no hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The loss went to Tanner Jesson-Dalton, who allowed a run in the top of the eighth inning. Jesson-Dalton’s final line was one run on one hit and one walk over two innings. He did not strike anyone out.
South Bend scored all six runs in a six-run third inning when they hit seven singles. Left fielder Bradley Beesley started the inning with a single and hit the seventh single later in the inning. He finished 2 for 5 with one run scored and one run batted in.
Shortstop Delvin Zinn went 2 for 4 with a walk and two steals. He now has 28 steals (and one caught stealing) in 36 games.
Myrtle Beach Pelicans
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans put the Columbia Fireflies (Royals) in a jar, 7-6.
Starter Adam Laskey pitched the first four innings and allowed four runs on four hits, including two home runs. Laskey walked two and struck out four.
The win went to Gabriel Jaramillo, who pitched the fifth and sixth inning. He gave up one run on two hits over two innings. Jaramillo walked two and struck out two.
Carlos Ocampo faced the final four batters of the game for the Fireflies and struck out all four of them for the save.
Right fielder Yohendrick Pinango hit his third home run of the year in the third inning with the bases empty. He finished the game going 3 for 4 and scoring three runs.
First baseman Matt Mervis was 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the sixth inning. He scored two times.
Center fielder Jacob Wetzel went 2 for 4. He had one run batted in and scored one run.
